Leading medieval historian and broadcaster Professor Robert Bartlett tells the story of the Christian cult of the saints from the second to the sixteenth centuries. He says you cannot truly understand culture, art, literature, the calendar and place names without understanding the global story of the holy dead in the Christian tradition. He looks at the diverse lives of those who came to be canonised , how they shaped the architecture of major cities and the impact they had on literature.

Bartlett is the Bishop Wardlaw Professor of Medieval History at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. His books include The Making of Europe, joint winner of the Wolfson History Prize, and The Hanged Man: A Story of Miracle, Memory, and Colonialism in the Middle Ages. He has also written and presented documentaries on the Middle Ages for BBC television.
