Welcome to a Very Short Introduction soapbox. A short talk lasting 15 minutes from an expert in the field. The talk is free and takes place in the Blackwell’s Marquee, next to the Sheldonian Theatre.

Classics tutor William Allan explains what the ‘classics’ are and why they continue to shape Western concepts of literature. He shows the variety and sophistication of Greek and Latin literature and looks at the major genres. Allan is a fellow and tutor in classics at University College, Oxford, and has written widely on Greek tragedy and epic poetry.
