Poet David Constantine talks to fellow poet and festival director of academic programmes Professor Jem Poster about why poetry matters. In his new book as part of Oxford University Press’s Literary Agenda series, Constantine argues that poetry is not for the few but for the many, that it speaks to and for people, and that it can only thrive among them. He looks at what goes into the writing of a poem and considers what good there is in reading it.

Constantine is a poet, novelist and short story writer who taught German language and literature at Durham University and at The Queen’s College, Oxford. His most recent poetry collection is Nine Fathoms Deep.
