We all rely on indexes to help us navigate the books we read. But what if the index was designed to make the rest of the book look idiotic? Dennis Duncan looks back to a time when Tories and Whigs used indexes to make a mockery of their rivals by turning their own words against them.

Duncan is a junior research fellow in English with a particular research interest in the history of the book index.

Presented by the Bodleian Libraries.
