Award-winning novelist Francesca Kay talks to fellow writer Jem Poster about her new novel, The Long Room; set in 1980s London against the backdrop of the Cold War, it explores a mind under pressure and the power of the imagination.

Kay grew up in South East Asia and India, has lived in Jamaica, the United States and Germany and now lives in Oxford. Her first novel, An Equal Stillness, won the Orange Award for New Writers.

Poet and novelist Poster is emeritus professor of creative writing, Aberystwyth University, and director of academic programmes for the FT Weekend Oxford Literary Festival.

This event is part of the festival’s women in society programme sponsored by HSBC.
