Presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour Dame Jenni Murray celebrates British heroines who helped to push back boundaries and revolutionise the world.

Murray says when she came across the story of Boadicea as a ten-year-old she first realised that her future was not necessarily to be sweet, domesticated and super feminine. Boadicea is among her history-making women as are the first female MP Nancy Astor, the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, the pioneering physician Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and the fashion designer Mary Quant. Murray tells the stories of these heroines who refused to submit to the established laws of society.

Murray is a journalist and broadcaster who has presented Woman’s Hour since 1987. She is author of several books including Memoirs of a Not So Dutiful Daughter.

This event is part of the festival’s women in society series sponsored by HSBC.
