The leading actor of stage, screen and radio Toby Jones talks about his life and career and about how he interprets the written word in his performances. He is renowned for the range of his work and for his intelligent and nuanced character acting.

On television, Jones was recently seen as the evil villain Culverton Smith in BBC1 series Sherlock, as the lead of the BBC1 Agatha Christie adaptation The Witness For The Prosecution, and as Lance in Mackenzie Crook’s award-winning BBC4 comedy Detectorists. Jones made his big breakthrough as Truman Capote in the 2006 film Infamous. Since then, he has starred in many films including The Mist, Frost/Nixon, Captain America, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Hunger Games, Tale of Tales, Dad’s Army, The Man Who Knew Infinity, By Our Selves, Anthropoid, and Morgan. Jones also recently played Roger Yount in a three-part BBC adaptation of John Lanchester’s novel Capital, and agent Verloc in a BBC adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role as Alfred Hitchcock in The Girl, and was nominated for British Academy Television Awards for his lead in the acclaimed BBC drama Marvellous, and for his performance in Detectorists.
