Novelist Naomi Alderman talks about her approaches to writing fiction across different genres and about her latest novel of ‘feminist science fiction’, The Power.

Alderman writes literary novels, science fiction and alternate reality games. She won the Orange Award for New Writers in 2006 for Disobedience and was named Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year in 2007.  She describes her latest and fourth novel, The Power, as feminist science fiction. It describes a world in which girls suddenly find they can inflict agonising pain or death with a flick of the finger. Alderman spent a year being mentored by the Booker-winning Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood in 2012 under a scheme in which successful artists mentor rising young artists in a variety of fields including literature.

Here Alderman talks to fellow novelist Joanne Harris, who has written bestselling novels across a range of genres, including Chocolat, which was made into an Oscar-winning movie.
