Award-winning travel writer Nicholas Jubber talks about his journey across the Sahara and his encounters with the nomadic communities that live around the legendary city of Timbuktu.

Jubber travelled to the city that was once the seat of African civilisation but is now home to terrorists and a place where the inhabitants greet you with a ‘welcome to the middle of nowhere’. There he learned about the ways of the Tuareg, Fulani, Berbers and other communities and discovered how they are facing the challenges of the 21st century.

Jubber is author of The Prester Quest, a journey from the canals of Venice to the highlands of Ethiopia in the footsteps of a medieval physician that won the Dolman Travel Book Award, and of Drinking Arak off an Ayatollah’s Beard, an exploration of the Persian-speaking world through the lens of an 11th-century poem.
