Illustrators Elys Dolan, Matty Long and Neill Cameron know all about being funny in pictures. Hear them reveal the tricks to making pictures that make the audience laugh and learn the art of being funny with art.
Dolan’s books include Steven Seagull Action Hero and Nuts in Space. They are full of wit and humour that appeals to adults and children in equal measure. She has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal.
Long is the creator of the hilarious Super Happy Magic Forest books. The first one was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and its follow-up, Super Happy Magic Forest: Slug of Doom, was published this year. Long’s style has been described as ‘Tolkien for toddlers’
Cartoonist and writer Cameron’s latest hit, Mega Robo Bros, mixes cyber-futurism and absurdist action sequences in ways that have children laughing out loud. He is also creator of Mo-Bot High and The Pirates of Pangaea (with Daniel Hartwell), Tamsin and the Deep (with Kate Brown), and the guide How to Make Awesome Comics. His work appears in the weekly children’s comic, The Phoenix.
