Historian, biographer, novelist and broadcaster Simon Sebag Montefiore talks about his life and work including his award-winning novels, works of history and television series.

Sebag Montefiore’s bestselling books have been published in 40 languages and include The Romanovs; Stalin: the Court of the Red Tsar, winner of the History Book of the Year; and Young Stalin, winner of the Costa Biography award. Jerusalem: the Biography was a number one bestseller and winner of the Jewish Book of the Year prize. He has written and presented a number of series for the BBC including Jerusalem: Making of a Holy City, Rome: History of the Eternal City, Byzantium: A Tale of Three Cities.

Sebag Montefiore is also a successful historical novelist. His most recent book is Red Sky at Noon, the third part of his award-winning Moscow trilogy. The story switches between war against the Nazis in the grasslands of southern Russia and love and intrigue in Stalin’s Kremlin. Red Sky at Noon is a story of passion, bravery and human survival. The two earlier novels are Sashenka and One Night in Winter, winner of the Political Novel of the Year.

Here he talks to Nick Higham, a BBC correspondent and a former presenter of Meet the Author on the BBC news channel.

To mark European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the European Commission is enabling the festival to offer free tickets for this event to school pupils, and all college and university students. Tickets can be booked through the usual channels.
