Novelist and historian Deborah Harkness discusses her international bestselling All Souls Trilogy, the Sky TV adaptation of the first in the trilogy, A Discovery of Witches, and a new novel set in the same world, Time’s Convert.
A Discovery of Witches finds historian and reluctant witch Diana Bishop thrown into a dangerous mystery after the discovery of a manuscript in the Bodleian Library. The television adaptation stars Teresa Palmer as Bishop and Matthew Goode as enigmatic geneticist and ancient vampire Matthew Clairmont. The series began on Sky One on September 14 and runs for eight episodes. Time’s Convert, meanwhile, is set in modern Paris and London and in the American colonies during a time of upheaval that exploded into revolution. It is a story of what it takes to become a vampire.
Harkness is a history professor at the University of Southern California. Her All Souls Trilogy has sold more than 3 million copies in 40 countries. The books weave together history, science, magic and romance. Harkness researched the history of magic and science for her doctoral degree, including in the Bodleian Libraries and in All Souls College Library.
