Childhood and the Irish Writer

One of Ireland’s best-known literary critics Professor Declan Kiberd looks at the ways in which the childhoods of W B Yeats, Oscar Wilde and James Joyce not only lie behind many of their masterpieces but also explain the modernist elements of fragmentation and multiple selfhood in their works.

Kiberd says much of their writing could be reclassified as children’s literature – Wilde’s Fairy Tales, Yeats’s Reveries over Childhood and Youth, the opening sections of Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man – but for the fact that it is part of the story of high modernism. He considers the relationship between modernism and a childhood that exists mainly to “disappear”. He also looks at some of the childhood literature generated after Irish independence, from Lewis’s Narnia (which may be a code-name for Northern Ireland) to the West of Ireland, which features in Edna O’Brien’s The Country Girls and Kate Thompson’s The New Policeman – all places that seem at once utopian and dystopian.

Kiberd is Donald and Marilyn Keough Professor of Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame and an international authority on the literature of Ireland. He is author of Inventing Ireland, Ulysses and Us and Irish Classics.

This event is part of the festival’s programme of Irish literature and culture..
