Portable Magic: The History of our Long Love Affair with Books

Emma Smith

Friday, 1 April 2022

10:00am

1 hour

Weston Lecture Theatre

£7 - £12.50

Shakespeare expert Professor Emma Smith looks at our attitude to books – portable magic – and finds a relationship with the written word that is more reciprocal and more turbulent than we imagine.

Smith looks back over 1,000 years and reveals that it as much the physical form of a book as it is the written words that gives them their magic. She looks at the rise of the mass-market paperback, explodes the myth that print began with Gutenberg, shows how reading habits were shaped by American soldiers, and proposes new definitions of a classic or even of a book itself.

Smith is professor of Shakespeare studies at the University of Oxford and author of This is Shakespeare.
