Acclaimed historian and television presenter Thomas Asbridge evokes the grandeur and barbarity of the Middle Ages through the life of one of history’s most illustrious knights, William Marshal. Marshal was the Lancelot of his time but his story is little known today.  Asbridge explains how he narrowly escaped the gallows at the age of five and rose from relatively humble beginnings to train as a knight and serve at the right hand of five English monarchs.  Marshal befriended Richard the Lionheart, Eleanor of Aquitaine and King John, and helped to negotiate the terms of the Magna Carta.

Asbridge is a reader in medieval history at Queen Mary University, London, and an international expert on the Crusades. He is author of The First Crusade and The Crusades, and has written and presented a major BBC television series on the Crusades and a documentary on Marshal.
