On 9 February 1933, barely ten days after Adolf Hitler had become Chancellor of Germany, the Oxford Union sent shockwaves around the world when its members declared that they would, in no circumstances, fight for King and Country. It became known as the “Oxford Oath”.
Historian David Vaiani examines this epoch-rocking moment in King and Country, unearthing for the first time original archive material from the Oxford Union, the Bodleian and various Oxford colleges to tell the full story of the debate – and its soon-to-be-notable protagonists, including Michael Foot, Dean Rusk and Terence Rattigan.
Why did these students not want to fight? Did the resolution really influence Hitler and Mussolini’s calculations for war? And what happened to that generation when Britain eventually found herself at war in 1939? Vaiani seeks to understand this fascinating period of history through the eyes of a generation that said no to war.
David Vaiani is the author of Jeremy Catto: A Portrait of the Quintessential Oxford Don (2024). He teaches History at Cranleigh School.
