Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord George Carey looks at the rise of President Donald Trump and suggests that, far from being an aberration, he has been called forth by our times.

Carey argues that a sensible discussion of Trump and his policies is impossible because of an overreaction to his election. There are plenty of dictators and tyrants way ahead in the queue for the title of worst leader, including Mugabe, Assad, and many of Trump’s predecessors as president. And he says that Trump’s comments have struck a chord with the many Americans who feel they have been left behind.

Carey was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002. He holds a doctorate from King’s College London and, before becoming Archbishop, taught at three Anglican theological colleges.
