Writer and biographer Julie Summers gives a definitive guide to fashion throughout the Second World War. Fashion on the Ration was written in association with an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum. Summers explains how the effects of rationing, ‘make do and mend and Hollywood had an impact on what people wore. And she shows how the clothes people wore reflected changing lives and outlooks as women’s hemlines rose and they began to take on traditional male jobs.

Summers is the author of Sandy Irvine, Fearless on Everest; The Colonel: Philip Toosey; Bridge on the River Kwai and Jambusters, a history of the Women’s Institute in the Second World War, which is being turned in to a six-part drama series for ITV.
