Legendary award-winning actress and world authority on Indian food Madhur Jaffrey prepares a three-course lunch with wine for guests at the Gallery, The Old Bank Hotel, and will speak about the importance of food to our culture and families.

Jaffrey was born in Delhi and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London following a performance in Tennessee Williams’s Auto-da-Fe. From there her career took off. She appeared in various BBC TV and radio plays and enjoyed a spell in New York before her big success in Shakespeare Wallah.  She went on to star in further Merchant Ivory films and to win accolades for theatre performances on Broadway and in the West End, and continues to appear in movies and TV films today.

She has also carved out a second career as a food writer and broadcaster and is regarded as a world authority on Indian cuisine. She has published many cookery books and a memoir Climbing the Mango Trees: A Memoir of a Childhood in India. Her first book, An Invitation to Indian Cookery, was published in 1973, and her first BBC series, Indian Cookery, turned her into a household name.

Jaffreywill be assisted in the preparation of lunch by Paul Bloomfield, patron of Oxford Gastronomica and celebrated London-based chef. In addition to working with Jaffrey, Bloomfield has staged numerous high-profile dinners in locations worldwide, with leading figures such as Ken Hom and Claudia Roden.
