One of the UK’s leading authorities on Islam Professor Carole Hillenbrand gives an expert’s introduction to the history and beliefs of this great world religion. Hillenbrand begins with the life of Muhammed and places the beliefs and ideals of Muslims in a historical and global context. She emphasises Islam’s diversity and looks at its place in a globalised 21st century.

Hillenbrand is professor emerita in Islamic history at the University of Edinburgh and professor of Islamic history at the University of St Andrews. She has written a number of books on Islam, including the international bestseller The Crusades: Islamic Perspectives, and was the first non-Muslim to win the King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies.
