Welcome to a Very Short Introduction soapbox. A short talk lasting 15 minutes from an expert in the field. The talk is free and takes place in Blackwell’s Marquee, next to the Sheldonian Theatre.

Academic and author Jolyon Mitchell looks at why some people are drawn to giving their lives in martyrdom and what place religion plays in inciting and creating martyrs. Mitchell also looks at the debate surrounding martyrs, where one person’s martyr is another person’s terrorist or suicide bomber. Mitchell is director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues at the University of Edinburgh and a former BBC World Service producer and journalist.
