Award-winning authors Elizabeth Laird and Gill Lewis introduce their new books, Welcome to Nowhere and A Story Like the Wind, take children’s questions, and discuss with their young audience ways to make the world a better place. Both write vivid, unforgettable children’s books that concern major issues and current events. Here they will be joined by Anna Bassi, editor of acclaimed children’s newspaper, The Week Junior.

Laird trained as an English language teacher, and her first job was in Addis Ababa. She has retained a strong interest in Ethiopia, and has written several books set there, including CILIP Carnegie Medal-shortlisted The Fastest Boy in the World. Running workshops for writers in Gaza and the West Bank and visiting several refugee camps inspired A Little Piece of Ground. Spending time in Amman and meeting refugee families inspired Welcome to Nowhere.

Lewis’s stories reflect her passion for wild animals in wild places. She draws inspiration from many of the people she has had the fortune to meet during her work as a vet, both at home and abroad. Her first novel, Sky Hawk, was nominated for 15 book awards, including the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, the Red House Children’s Book Award, and the CILIP Carnegie Medal. Her second novel, White Dolphin, was shortlisted for the Centurion Book Award and the Kernow Youth Book Award, and Scarlet Ibis won the Little Rebels Award.

Bassi is editor of The Week Junior, an award-winning title that combines current affairs, science, sport, animals, environment, books, entertainment and activities, for 8-14 year olds.
