Historian, writer and broadcaster Dr Michael Scott challenges our perceptions of ten centuries of the classical era and offers a new reading for a globalised age.

Scott questions the western-focused understanding of Greco-Roman civilisation and connects it to the great empires of central Asia including India and China. He says the great powers shared ambitions and ways of thinking and governing and connects events such as the birth of Athenian democracy and the Roman republic with the age of Confucius; Hannibal’s challenge to Rome and the arrival of the first Chinese emperor; and the imposition of Christianity on the Roman world as Buddhism was spreading across China.

Scott is associate professor in classics and ancient history at the University of Warwick. He has written and presented several television documentaries on the ancient world for the BBC, National Geographic and the History Channel including Rome’s Invisible City for BBC1.
