Expert in medieval literature Professor Carolyne Larrington looks at the historical inspiration behind George R R Martin’s fantasy novels and the Game of Thrones television series based on them.

Larrington explains how Martin constructed his universe out of the Middle Ages. She looks at the novels and the television series and explores subjects such as sigils, giants, dragons and direwolves in medieval texts; ravens, old gods and the Weirwood in Norse myth; and a gothic, exotic orient in the eastern continent, Essos.

Larrington is a fellow and tutor in Medieval English literature at St John’s College, Oxford. Her other books include The Women’s Companion to Mythology; King Arthur’s Enchantresses: Morgan and her Sisters in Arthurian Tradition; and The Land of the Green Man: A Journey through the Supernatural Landscapes of the British Isles.
