Bestselling Italian writer and host of Italy’s most popular history and science programs Alberto Angela follows the money to explain the reach and power of the Roman Empire.

Angela uses the journey of a single coin to explain the vastness of the Roman Empire at its peak, what it was like to live in the empire and how places as diverse as Scotland and Kuwait, the Sahara and the North Sea were united under one rule. Angela is famed in Italy for his ability to bring history to life through narrative. Here he focuses on the daily life so often ignored in more academic treatments.

Angela is a palaeontologist, naturalist, scientific reporter, writer and freelance journalist. He was part of the team that discovered the famous hominid ‘Lucy’. He is author of many books including the bestselling A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome: Daily Life, Mysteries, and Curiosities. He has presented numerous Italian television series, including the Italian version of Big Cat Diary, and continues to present a number of long-running and popular Italian television shows on history, travel, discovery, exploration, and space.

This event is part of the festival’s Italian day.
