Volcanologist Professor David Pyle uses eye witness accounts, artwork and scientific observations to trace the history of encounters with volcanoes.

His illustrated talk will draw on stories ranging from Pliny the Younger’s account of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, to explorers’ tales of strange mountains that spewed fire and stones, and poetry and literature inspired by volcanic phenomena to explain the consequences of past volcanic eruptions. He will also trace how understanding of volcanoes and the Earth’s interior have developed over time, from early concepts of subterranean fires to the emergence of modern volcano science.

Pyle is a volcanologist and professor of earth sciences at the University of Oxford.

An associated exhibition, Volcanoes, takes place at the Weston Library, Broad Street, Oxford, between February 10 and May 21 2017. Entry is free.
