Graphic designer, writer and editor Simon Loxley shares his passion for typefaces and explains the stories and meanings behind some of the fonts explored in his Type is Beautiful: The Story of Fifty Remarkable Fonts
.
Loxley looks at the stories behind the great fonts and those who created them.  Sometimes they were responding to their own impulses or objectives. Not infrequently they just needed to make some money. And occasionally, the world takes what they have done and finds its own meaning. Shapes on a page or screen but, woven into their very essence, war, death, politics, business, obsession, vision, art – and beauty.
Loxley is a freelance graphic designer and design writer and the founding editor of Ultrabold magazine.

Presented by the Bodleian Libraries.
