Farmer and bestselling writer Amanda Owen talks about her latest collection of stories of life as a shepherdess in the Yorkshire Dales.

Owen shares the hill farm with her husband Clive, eight children and a flock of 1,000 sheep.  The year sees nine-year-old Miles get his first flock, Reuben taking up the flugelhorn and the birth of a new baby girl. A mother sheep makes a two-day journey to find its lamb and Clive is almost arrested on a midnight stake-out to catch a sheep-worrying dog.

Owen was inspired by the James Herriot books to become a farmer. She was voted Yorkshire Woman of the Year by Dalesman magazine and is also author of the top ten bestseller The Yorkshire Shepherdess. She has featured on Ben Fogles’s New Lives in the Wild series on Channel 5 and in ITV’s Countrywise: Guide to Britain. Here she talks to Nick Clark, former arts correspondent of The Independent.
