‘My subject is War and the Pity of War.’ So declared Wilfred Owen in one of the most famous manifestos in English literature. Killed at the Sambre-Oise canal one week before the Armistice, he left behind poems and letters that created a powerful legacy, one that has come to shape perceptions of Great War ever since. Jane Potter, senior lecturer and researcher at Oxford Brookes University, discusses the writing of her new book, Wilfred Owen: An Illustrated Life. She tells the story of his life from the romantic youth steeped in Keats to the soldier experiencing the full horrors of war.

Potter is also author of Boys in Khaki, Girls in Print: Women’s Literary Responses to the Great War, 1914-1918 and The Selected Letters of Wilfred Owen.
