Writer and poet Professor Jem Poster examines the links between one of the most significant poets of the 20th-century, Edward Thomas, and the 19th-century writers, Richard Jefferies and George Borrow.

This year is the centenary of the death of Thomas, killed in the First World War and posthumously recognised as one of the most significant poets of the 20th-century. He was also the author of important biographies of novelist and nature writer Jefferies and novelist and travel writer George Borrow, both of which have been newly edited for Oxford University Press by Poster. Poster explains both Jefferies’s profound influence on Thomas’s life and writings and the particular difficulties Thomas experienced in writing the life of Borrow – an author whose ostensibly autobiographical works had long been recognised as a confusing mixture of fact and fiction. Thomas studied at Lincoln College, Oxford, before the First World War.

Poster is programme advisor to Cambridge University’s MSt in creative writing and author of a collection of poetry, Brought to Light, and two novels, Courting Shadows and Rifling Paradise.
