Art writer and curator Ian Collins looks at the colourful life and work of the 20th-century British artist John Craxton.
Craxton escaped from war-ruined Britain to Greece where he found a warmth and freedom that suffused his life and work. He banned any book of his life from 1948 and eventually relented only for Collins. Collins draws on his own friendship with Craxton and private material to paint a picture of an anarchic spirit from the time he roared around the streets of London with his friend Lucian Freud to the ‘heroic hedonism’ of his later years in Crete. He throws new light on Craxton’s fraught relationship with Freud and his relationships with other painters and writers. It is a portrait of a man who lived for pleasure and painted it.
