Twelve Caesars: Images of Power from the Ancient World to the Modern
Mary Beard Interviewed by Nick Higham

Classicist and cultural commentator Dame Mary Beard talks to former BBC journalist Nick Higham about her new book on how images of Roman autocrats have influenced art, culture and the representation of power for more than 2,000 years.
Beard asks why portraits of rich, powerful and famous westerners have been shaped by the images of Roman emperors, and in particular by 12 murderous Caesars. Who gets commemorated in art and why? And, against the backdrop of ‘sculpture wars’, how do we react to statues of politicians we deplore?
Beard is a world-leading classicist and author of SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome and Women and Power: A Manifesto. She has written and presented television programmes including Civilisations, Meet the Romans and The Shock of the Nude.
Higham was a BBC journalist for 30 years, during which time he was an arts and media correspondent and presenter of Meet the Author on the BBC news channel.
