Bestselling thriller writer Robert Harris talks to FT business columnist and novelist John Gapper about his latest novel, An Officer and a Spy, set in late 19th-century France. Harris has turned to one of the most famous miscarriages of justice in history, the Dreyfus affair, for the backdrop to his latest work.  It is a scandal, with a rogue intelligence agency, justice corrupted in the name of national security, and government cover-up, that has echoes today.

Army officer Georges Picquart witnesses the convicted spy Capt Alfred Dreyfus being publicly humiliated. He is promoted to the shadowy intelligence unit that tracked down Dreyfus but begins to realise that there is something corrupt at the heart of it.

Harris is author of eight bestselling novels including Fatherland, Enigma, The Ghost and The Fear Index. Several have been filmed, including The Ghost Writer (The Ghost)directed by Roman Polanski and starring Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams.
