Writer Graham Robb explains how his plan to cycle the legendary Via Heraklea from the south-western tip of the Iberian peninsula, across the Pyrenees and towards the Alps changed the way he saw a civilization. The path took him deep into the world of the Celts, their gods, their art and their sophisticated knowledge of science. What was revealed to Robb was a map of Europe that had been forgotten for almost 2,000 years and of an empire that covered a vast area of Europe.

Robb has published widely on French literature and history including an award-winning biography of Victor Hugo and The Discovery of France, winner of the Duff Cooper and Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje prizes. Parisians: An Adventure History of Paris was a Sunday Times top ten seller.
