Historian Professor Christopher Duggan talks about his Wolfson-Prize-winning Fascist Voices: An Intimate History of Mussolini’s Italy. Duggan explores how the Italian fascist movement became embodied in Benito Mussolini, who attained an almost divine status in many Italian’s eyes. He makes use of rarely examined sources to show how the ordinary Italian experienced fascism on a daily basis, and how it influenced their beliefs, language and lifestyle. Why did fascism enjoy so much support and why does the ’cult of the Duce’ still resonate in modern Italy?

Duggan is professor of Italian history at the University of Reading. He has written several books on modern Italian history.

This event is part of the festival’s Italian Day.
