Welcome to a Very Short Introduction soapbox. A short talk lasting 15 minutes from an expert in the field. The talk is free and takes place in the Blackwell Marquee, next to the Sheldonian Theatre.

English literature tutor Christopher Butler provides an introduction to modernism across various aesthetic and cultural fields. Is a tower block, an unmade bed, a lavatory basin or a bicycle chained to a gate a work of art? Why should a novel have a beginning, a middle, an end, or even a story? Butler, tutor in English literature and curator of pictures at Christ Church, Oxford, says everything has been influenced by the legacy of modernism.
