Bestselling travel writer and award-winning novelist Tim Parks returns to the subject of his adopted homeland with a fresh portrait of Italy through a witty account of its train system. Parks uses his 30 years’ experience of travelling on the Italian system, whether a daily commute from Verona to Milan, his regular trips to Florence and Rome, or his occasional forays to Naples and Sicily, to reveal what he terms the ‘charmingly irritating dystopian paradise of Italy’.

Parks has lived in Italy since 1981. His accounts of life in Northern Italy, Italian Neighbours, An Italian Education and A Season with Verona, were all bestsellers. He has also written more than a dozen novels and other works of non-fiction and has won Somerset Maugham, Betty Trask and Llewellyn Rhys awards His novel, Europa, was shortlisted for the Booker.

This event is part of the Italian Day at the festival.
