Burning the Books: A History of Knowledge under Attack
Richard Ovenden
Sunday, 31 October 2021
12:00pm
1 hour
Weston Lecture Theatre
£7 - £12.50
Bodley’s Librarian Richard Ovenden makes a passionate case for physical books and libraries and argues that this preservation of knowledge is vital for the survival of civilisation.
Ovenden looks back through 3,000 years, from Mesopotamian clay tablets trying to predict the future, to Tudor book-hunters and Nazi bonfires, and on to the digital age. Ovenden was inspired to write the book by his anger at the destruction of the Windrush landing records. He looks at the motivations of those who have sought to deny the truth and eradicate the past and celebrates the efforts to protect archives and libraries.
‘You expect librarians to have plenty of good stories, but perhaps not to be burning with passion. This erudite, urgent book is full of both’ Sunday Times
Ovenden is the 25th Bodley’s Librarian in a line that stretches back to 1600.
