Former MP, historian and now director of the Victoria and Albert Museum Dr Tristram Hunt talks about his new biography of the great designer, entrepreneur, abolitionist, and beacon of the Industrial Revolution Josiah Wedgwood.
Hunt describes Wedgwood as ‘the Steve Jobs of the 18th century’. He revolutionised the production of ceramics from his workshops in Stoke-on-Trent by joining technology, design, manufacturing efficiency and retail flair. He also campaigned for free trade and religious toleration, and created the ceramic ‘Emancipation Badge’ that became the symbol of the abolitionist movement.
Hunt was a senior lecturer in British history and has written several books including The English Civil War: At First Hand and The Frock-Coated Communist: The Revolutionary Life of Friedrich Engels. He was MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central between 2000 and 2017 when he helped to raise £15.75 million to transfer the Wedgwood Museum collection to the V&A to be held for the nation in perpetuity.
