Poets represented include Spender, Donne, Milton, and Wordsworth, and their works are met with expert commentary and explanation by Carey.

Carey is emeritus professor at the University of Oxford and chief book reviewer for The Sunday Times. His books include Little History of Poetry, The Essential Paradise Lost, What Good Are the Arts?, studies of Donne and Dickens, and a prizewinning biography of William Golding. Here he talks to Irish poet and academic Professor Bernard O’Donoghue.
