Chocolat author Joanne Harris talks about her widely anticipated new thriller A Narrow Door.

The novel is Harris’s first new thriller for several years. It is set in a prestigious school and tackles themes of gender politics, identity, secrets and lies, and how the past controls our future. It plays out like a game of chess with two narrators each making their moves and revealing their gameplan as the novel builds to an explosive finish.

Harris is author of 14 novels, two cookbooks and collections of short stories. Her 1999 novel Chocolat sold more than a million copies and was made into a film starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. Chocolat was part of a series of food-themed novels based on the lives of villagers in Lansquenet-sous-Tannes. She has also written fantasy novels based on Norse myth and a series of psychological thrillers. Harris was awarded the festival’s honorary fellowship in 2019. Here she talks to former BBC journalist and LBC presenter Matthew Stadlen.
