Literary guide and author Henry Eliot gives an illustrated talk on the Penguin classics and modern classics series, asks what makes a classic and recommends some of the lesser known titles on the lists.
Eliot’s new book The Penguin Modern Classics Book includes a guide by continent, region and author to the modern classics in the Penguin series. There are sketches of modernist movements and lists of titles grouped by themes. There are 58 living authors featured in the book.
Eliot is also author of Penguin Classics Book and Curiocity: An Alternative A to Z of London. He is presenter of the On the Road with Penguin Classics podcast and organiser of literary tours including a recreation of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a Lake Poets tour of Cumbria, and a quest for the Holy Grail based on Malory’s Morte D’Arthur.
