Historian and former editor of Country Life Clive Aslet gives an illustrated talk on his retelling of the story of the British country house.
Aslet looks back to Roman times for the precursors of the country house and explores how buildings and their surroundings have evolved with the changing political, economic and social landscape. He uncovers the captivating stories behind individual houses and their architects and explains how the country house first flourished, declined and then enjoyed a modern renaissance. He says the country house has once again become a symbol of an ideal way of life, a sanctuary from fast-paced modern life and a shelter from global pandemic.
Aslet has written more than 20 books on architecture and history. He was editor of Country Life for 13 years.
