Moroccan novelist and filmmaker Abdellah Taïa who became the first openly gay Arab writer in 2006, talks about his selection of short stories, Another Morocco.

The book collects short stories from his first two books, My Morocco and The Red of the Fez, published before he came out as gay. The stories of life in a working-class Moroccan family find a writer flirting with strategies of revelation and concealment. It was during a book tour for The Red of the Fez that a reporter questioned him about themes of homosexuality she detected in the work. Taïa agreed to the interview and the subsequent profile, Homosexual against all odds, despite homosexuality being outlawed in his home country.

Taïa is author of eight novels including Salvation Army and An Arab Melancholia. He won the Prix de Flore for his novel Le jour du roi about the death of Morocco’s King Hassan II. He also directed and wrote a film adaptation of Salvation Army.
