Journalist, author and feminist campaigner Julie Bindel looks at what defines lesbian culture, love and friendship and asks why lesbians often face a particular hostility.
Bindel says lesbians face particular challenges when compared with the experiences of gay men. She argues that lesbians continue to suffer from bigotry and discrimination because sexism and enforced gender codes are still unchallenged. Bindel says some of the biggest attacks on lesbian freedom and wellbeing come not only from conservatives but also from progressives.
Bindel is co-director and founder of The Lesbian Project and co-founder of Justice for Women. She is a long-time campaigner for the rights of abused and marginalised women and against male violence. Her books include Feminism for Women: The Real Route to Liberation and The Pimping of Prostitution: Abolishing the Sex Work Myth.
