Researcher Kathryn Sutherland provides some fascinating insights into the life of Jane Austen through a series of objects that crossed her path in life and afterwards.
Sutherland describes objects including a teenage notebook, a muslin shawl, a wallpaper fragment, a tea caddy, the theatrical poster for a play she attended, the dining-room grate at Chawton Cottage where she lived, the last manuscript page of her unfinished novel and a lock of hair kept by her sister, Cassandra. Through them she invites us to meet Austin at particular points in her life.
Sutherland is a senior research fellow at St Anne’s College, Oxford. She will be introduced by Samuel Fanous, head of publishing at the Bodleian Library
