Thriller writer Charlie Higson kicks off the festival’s new crime fiction programme as he discusses his latest novel for adults, Whatever Gets You Through the Night, a dark thriller that uncovers the truths lurking behind a Mediterranean idyll.
The novel’s protagonist McIntyre specialises in getting people out of places they don’t want to be. He is tasked with getting 15-year-old Lauren out of the luxury compound of a tech billionaire and suspected paedophile in Corfu. He finds himself contending with Albanian gangsters, Greek drug dealers, psychotic bodyguards, flat earthers, and spoilt, wealthy teenagers looking for dangerous kicks.
Higson created and starred in the successful comedy series The Fast Show. He is also author of the Young Bond books and a successful horror series, The Enemy. Here he talks to Triona Adams, the director of the festival’s new crime fiction programme. The programme features a series of crime fiction writers during the first weekend.
