The Searchers: The Quest for the Lost of the First World War
Robert Sackville-West

12:00pm
1 hour
Oxford Martin School: Seminar Room
£7 - £12.50
Writer, publisher and historian Robert Sackville-West looks at the personal battles of those who sought the whereabouts of the hundreds of thousands of British soldiers missing and presumed dead on the battlefields of northern France and Flanders.
Sackville-West describes the extraordinary lengths to which many went to find out what happened to their loved ones. It includes the Kiplings’ search for their son’s grave, EM Forster’s conversations with traumatised soldiers in hospital in Alexandria, and the campaign to establish the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. And he looks at modern efforts using DNA to identify and honour the men lost.
Sackville-West worked in publishing and is now chair of Knole Estates, a property and investment company that runs, in conjunction with the National Trust, the family’s interests at Knole in Kent. He is author of Inheritance: The Story of Knole and the Sackvilles and The Disinherited.
