Historian Dr Ambrogio Caiani looks at the history of the Catholic Church in the modern age and its encounters with modernity including democracy, the nation state, science, literature and secular culture.

Caiani says the Catholic Church retreated after the French Revolution and the democratic rebellions of 1848. It denounced almost all aspects of modern life, including liberalism and socialism, and proclaimed the Pope’s infallibility, developed the cult of the Virgin Mary and her apparitions and refused all accommodations with the modern state. Things changed after a disastrous set of agreements with fascist states in the 1930s.

Caiani is a senior lecturer in history at the University of Kent, specialising in Revolutionary France, Napoleonic Italy and Catholicism. His books include To Kidnap a Pope: Napoleon and Pius VII 1800-1815.

This event is part of the festival’s programme on Christian tradition.
