Designer and printmaker Pia Östlund talks about reviving the lost art of nature printing and about her work with Oxford Botanic Garden.

Nature printing is seen as an early precursor to photography and involves use of an impression from a leaf, flower, fern or animal to produce an image. Capturing Nature, edited by Östlund and Matthew Zucker, brings together prints held in the Zucker Collection of 13,000 images across 130 rare books and journals. The book and an exhibition were launched at Oxford Botanic Garden’s recent 400th anniversary celebrations.  Östlund is now working on creatively developing the nature printing technique and taking it to new audiences.

Östlund is a designer and printmaker. She has been a design consultant to Oxford Botanic Garden since 2015 and has been working on interpretation for the new literary trail.
